Day of Mourning - September 19th, 2022
Dear Brothers & Sisters,
As you are aware Queen Elizabeth II who is Canada’s head of state, passed away on September 8th. The Federal Government and Provincial Government have announced that Monday September 19th, 2022, will be recognized and observed as a holiday. I understand the newly announced holiday came quickly and I have received many calls and emails from members wondering whether we will recognize this day. As per our collective agreement we shall include any day that may be declared a holiday by the Government of Canada or by the Government of the Province of British Columbia. The September 19th holiday would be in line with our Commercial/Institutional Collective Agreement.
Furthermore, I have discussed this holiday with VISMCA (Vancouver Island Sheet Metal Contractor Association) on how the holiday may impact certain projects due to the timing of the announcement. Understanding the limited notice of this holiday, Monday September 19th may be recognized by our members without repercussions or may be floated, with an alternate day scheduled to be taken off as mutually agreed between the employer and the employee. For those wanting to work, September 19th will consist of straight time rates.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact the union hall.
